Linux

Here, I collect assorted Linux-related material. I've been accumulating this stuff for awhile and thought it was time to share it.

Collected HOWTOs

Back when I ran KurtWerks on a server in my basement, I built a lot of the software that ran it from source code. Accordingly, I had plenty of opportunities to untangle knots, solve problems, iron out wrinkles, squash bugs, and stumble over implicit assumptions. I collected these experiences into documents that described how I installed various packages. As a service to the Linux community and to the Web at large, I'm putting these documents up for review and use. In some cases, I've also provided links to the packages in question so you an download them from my FTP site (via anonymous FTP).

Linux on a Toshiba Satellite 1805-S253

Although I no longer own the computer, I had Linux working on A Toshiba Satellite 1805-S253. My notes and settings might prove useful to someone with the same system.

Ripping and Burning a DVD on Linux

A short HOWTO for ripping and burning a DVD-Video disk.

Playing DVDs on Linux

Playing DVDs on Linux is unreasonably difficult. Not due to a shortcoming of Linux per se but to the shortsightedness of of RIAA (which I really think is an acronym for Recording Industry Assholes Association rather than Recording Industry Association of America) and the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America). Editorial posturing aside, I chronicle my efforts to make it possible to watch my DVDs on the computer of my choosing.

Diagnosing a DVD Media Failure

In Understanding a DVD Media Failure, I briefly chronicle my efforts to understand why a DVD burn failed.

Linux Kernel Configuration Help

What the world needs is a complete listing of the Linux kernel configuration help text. So, here ya go. I've updated it to be current with 2.6.18.1.

Getting Started with Git

To the surprise of few and the joy of many, Linus no longer uses Bitkeeper to maintain the kernel source code. These days, he uses a home-brewed tool named git. As it is a new tool, some people might need help getting started with it.

QuickCam Express Driver

I'm now the maintainer of the qc-usb driver for Logitech QuickCam Web cameras. I've taken over the work done by others, most recently Tuukka Toivonen, who did the initial work, part of which included setting the up the SourceForge project. Although the project is hosted at Sourceforge at the moment, it won't be staying there. KurtWerks has the most current downloads, TODO list, patches, and bugs.
